Caught in the rain.

Poppy almost flower

Twenty four hours of rain has been great for the veg; I wish I'd put out some tubs to catch some of it. I popped out earlier in the rain to sow another patch of parsley and noticed that one poppy bud had started to split open. Time for a photo!  I love the way the  raindrops are just caught on the hairs and the petals are pushing out of the bud.  Looks like it will be a beautiful colour too.

    1. Thank you for this lovely comment, Pauline - I've been keeping my eye on that flower for a few days now and luckily I really like to take photos in the rain!

  3. Hi Caro and thanks for visiting my blog and for your kind words! :) I can't remember where I got the chicken wire idea from, but I am regretting it slightly because I positioned it at the back of the bed, so as not to shade everything else, so I'm going to have to use a quasi-yoga position to pick the peas (which are growing on the West-facing side of the wire). Oh well, they do say stretching is good for you. :D What a fabulous blog you have - love the poppy photo!! I am in desperate need of a decent camera, been dropping hints for years, but it looks like I'm going to have to fork out for one myself... Laura :)

    1. Laura, I'm really pleased to have found your blog. I've also made disastrous positionings in the veg garden so it's good to have the downside of the chicken wire idea! Thanks for your lovely comment about my blog - I think half the trick of getting good pictures is to be in love with the garden and all that happens therein ... Caro xx

  4. Wonderful picture. I've one oriental poppy on the plot that has about a dozen buds on it, more than I've ever seen before. xx

    1. That will be a glorious sight once those buds open up! I guess it's all that rain we've had which has made growth in the garden so good. I hope you'll photograph your poppy when it opens! xx

  5. What a wonderful photo, you should enter that in a competition. I've never grown poppies, but I have lots of Welsh poppies which have self seeded in my garden this year.

    1. Gosh, thanks, Jo! I've always enjoyed the sight of poppies in other gardens so wanted to grow some in the veg garden and bought a coral coloured one by (happy) mistake! It's one of those plants that never fails to please!

  6. I love the detail in that photo! What type of camera are you using Caro?

    1. Thank you, Tanya. Considering how gloomy the weather was that day, the details captured by the camera are surprisingly good. My cameras are nothing very special - either a Canon digital SLR with a bog-standard zoom lens or a compact Panasonic Lumix. Both have got a high pixel count so a steady hand, lack of wind and lots of patience can get good results!

    1. Thank you Minimbah - and thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment, always nice to meet new people. I was amazed to read on your blog that you've recently been to Waterlow Park in Highgate and seen the raised beds. Waterlow Park is fairly close to the Urban Veg Patch and I know it well - Nice café there too! What a pity you didn't visit in the summer when all the wildflowers are blooming, that would have been a sight to remember!
